I want to create my own production company.
Yes, you read that right.
This is something that has been in the back of my mind for a little bit of time recently, but it really came to the forefront after learning about Camp Studios in Austin, Texas.
Camp Studios is an internet-native film studio producing and distributing original projects that started on the internet. Their big thing is that the film industry had a 100-year head start, but the internet is starting to catch up. “We aren't waiting for Hollywood's permission to tell stories, we're here to build something entirely new.” They are the real leaders of this movement right now, and I aspire to be like them in some regard.
Gen Z is known as the generation that doesn't want to work and that's constantly distracted, actually crave something deeper than the stereotypical 9-5 and working for other people. We want to tell stories. We want to get invested to these stories. Hollywood is declining, and the real storytellers of my generation are in bedrooms and dorm rooms using iPhones and Samsungs to tell stories, getting lavalier microphones off of Amazon, and using intuitive editing systems.
We are breaking the mold.
You don't have to go to film school anymore to create films. Yes, film school definitely helps, but it's not an entry barrier anymore. There are countless videos on YouTube talking about settings, compositions, color grading, pacing, editing, and even preproduction work of storyboarding and scriptwriting. YouTube educators are the new film school instructors. And YouTube filmmakers are the new Hollywood directors, as well as audio engineers, directors of photography, lightning technicians, editors, and producers. They wear many hats, even with a crew.
Working on my first ever short film, Roll For Perception, has been such an eye-opening experience. Last night was our second production day and being on set shows me how much I adore film and how this truly is my passion. Yes, it's a crew of 4, so we're all being directors and camera ops and audio engineers and lighting techs, but we're making a cohesive film and we're all super excited for it. At least I am. Because we're working on student films with minimal crew, we're able to call ourselves all these industry titles because it's true. I am a director. I am an editor, as well as a director of photography and an audio engineer.
So at the end of the day, I want to create a production company. Scratch that, I want to create a film company. Film is my passion, and seeing everything come together from start to finish, from preproduction to postproduction, is everything to me. It is my dream to establish myself as an icon to young filmmakers, and it's my dream to tell these stories that my brain creates.
And I will. Just you wait and see. 🎥✨
