Seeing Guns n Roses wasn't at all CLOSE to what I was expecting when I signed up to study abroad in October.
When I applied last fall to this program, I was expecting to work my internship, go to class, and maybe see another country or two. While I'm not seeing any other countries, I am exploring Barcelona with everything I learned about after arriving, such as the Olympic Museum, the Sagrada Familia, and the Cathedral. Other things, after looking on Google Maps, include the Temple of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, Montjuic Castle, and the Monastery of Pedralbes.
Once again, seeing Guns n Roses live wasn't anywhere on this bucket list.
All I was doing was going back to my homestay. I was taking the metro back, and I saw a poster. I took a picture so I could figure out more information. And then I started looking up the ticket prices and how close I could get to the stage. And then my sister was blowing up my phone saying that I need to go and my parents were asking me the same question.
The next thing I knew, I booked the ticket impulsively. Then, I was finally there.
All this happened in the span of less than a week.
My mother saw Guns n Roses in the 80s when she was my age. Seeing them felt full circle somehow, especially when I got to hear November Rain live. November Rain is my mother's favorite song by them. My family raised me on Guns n Roses, and other bands like Queen, Aerosmith, and AC/DC. Anytime they came on in the car, we would always turn the radio up and sing our hearts out.
Hearing Sweet Child O Mine and Paradise City live made my entire program. Seeing this band that I never imagined of seeing perform live made my entire program better. Between being homesick and not having many people to hang out with, going on a solo trip to the Olympic Stadium to see them made my entire program better.
With this, it taught me that solo trips are perfectly okay. You don't have to be around other students, workers, people every single day. It is okay to be by yourself and it is okay to take adventures by yourself.
This is an experience I'll hold dearly with me. Getting to study abroad is a once-in-a-lifetime experience for me, but getting to see Guns n Roses while abroad is wilder!
As a concert and music lover, this was a dream come true.
The Barcelona Broadcast episode for this concert will be out soon. I'll take you all to the paradise city. 🌹
