Last semester, a girl in my leadership class did her final presentation on the gender gap in filmmaking. About three months later, and that presentation is still on my mind, especially as I start being a producer and am getting ready to go into production for my first short film. Mariana did a wonderful job on her presentation, and to a mostly-female class, I think she chose a great topic that will resonate with a lot of us, even if only a few were filmmakers.
One thing that really stuck out in my mind as I look back at her statistics that she provided is just how small of a percentage women filmmakers take up, and specifically what roles they take. There's not as many women on set as there are off set. Only 12% as cinematographers and only 1% as gaffers. Are you kidding me? All of these women wanting to do film (or already doing film!) and barely any of them are on set to do the fun parts of film?
Even just the percentage of women getting hired to the roles under a female director and under a male director is actually insane! There shouldn't be a 29% increase in women cinematographers just because the director is female. Male directors, in my opinion, should be willing to work with more women DPs and cam ops to be able to employ them regularly.
I'm not sorry, but I'll be changing these statistics. I think it's so important that women are creating groups of other women filmmakers and encouraging them to find each other. Because of these groups, we're all changing the statistics.
Unfortunately, the film industry has always been and currently is male-dominated. Womens' perspectives are considered lesser because men are the baseline for most experiences. When you think about it, there's no shortage of talented women in film. There is a shortage of woman filmmakers being given access, opportunities, recognition, and money compared to their male peers.
This is where we change the game. This is where the world of cinema changes. At the Zimmerman school, we have an entire crew of female filmmakers, and I am so proud to be graduating with a bunch of them in a couple of months. We are going to change it. One day at a time, one step at a time, and one film at a time.
